As a doctor: Earning money before the permanent medical license (🇩🇪 die Approbation)

• Working as a doctor without an 🇩🇪 Approbation

Before getting the German permanent medical license (🇩🇪 die Approbation), can a (foreign) doctor earn money in Germany through working as a medical doctor?

Yes, in one case, if he got a:

German temporary medical license (🇩🇪 eine Berufserlaubnis)

But the Berufserlaubnis is restricted in many aspects and one cannot find easily a job. We explained the many differences in this article:

• Should I find a job before getting a medical license?

The great majority of foreign doctors do not work after coming to Germany because they need to learn German and prepare for the exams. Our suggestion is to try to concentrate on your German learning and applying for the Approbation.

• Disadvantages:

Working in non-medical jobs does not generate a lot of money. As a medical doctor, you get a much higher salary. Moreover, on the long run, you will be quickly done with your residency and hence be promoted. The salary difference between the gross salary of a specialist and a senior physician is 1618 Euro (getting promoted to a senior physician is mostly easy). More details here: “🇩🇪 How much money do doctors earn in German hospitals? 🫰💸💶”.

• Advantages:

On the other hand, by working, you can learn German, get contacts and learn more how the Germans think and behave. These are important advantages.

• In which jobs can you work?

You can work in jobs related or not related to medicine. If related or not makes a difference. There is a term for this kind of job and here we explain everything related to it:
