• Tell me where you work and your specialty, I tell you your income

In this article, we explain the salaries in clinics (🇩🇪 Praxis). Doctors working in clinics in Germany are said to be “in der Niederlassung” or that they work “im ambulanten Bereich”.

💡 “Praxis” is the German word for the English word “clinic”. We are mentioning this here because the word “Klinik” in German means hospital.

A few years ago, I took a picture of a table from a major medical association (2013 data). The table shows exactly how much doctors earn in clinics in that German state. The table was in the following three pages:

To understand the above table. Below the name of each specialty, three rows are showing average values of:

First raw: Income (🇩🇪 Einnahmen)How much is paid to the doctor by the health insurance companies.
Second raw: Expenses (🇩🇪 Aufwendugen)What the doctor has to pay as costs (e.g. salaries to workers like secretaries, materials, equipment, rent, electricity, heating, etc.)
Third raw: Annual surplus (🇩🇪 Jahresüberschuss)What the doctor ends up with is pure income (before taxes) (Brutto Einkommen). This is the most important number. 🥳

The list of specialties in the table are sorted by income. The first page shows the specialties with the highest average income (starting with radiology and then nuclear medicine). The last page shows the specialties with the least average income (at the end of the table: Psychotherapy).

Here are the most-paid and least-paid specialties:

Earning the most (=annual surplus):

Radiologists (311 thousand) > Nuclear medicine (288.2 thousand) > Cardiology (270 thousand) > Pneumology (223 thousand) > List goes on…

Earning the least:

Psychotherapy (65 thousand) < Psychosomatic Medicine & Psychotherapy (70 thousand) < Physical & Rehabilitative Medicine (109 thousand) < Psychiatry (112 thousand) < General physicians (GPs) (146 thousand)
