• Tell me where you work and your specialty, I tell you your income
Where you work and your specialty decide your income as a medical doctor in Germany! We explained the possible working places and the amount of money they could generate for the different specialties in the following article:
In this articles, we explain the salaries in private clinics (🇩🇪 Arbeit in einer Praxis = Die Niederlassung)
A few years ago I took a picture of a spreadsheet from a major medical association (2013 data). The table shows exactly how much the resident doctors earn for money. Photos are at the end of this article.
The income in the table is divided into three rows for each specialty:
– Income ( Einnahmen): How much is paid to the doctor by the health insurance companies.
– Expenses ( Aufwendugen): What the doctor has to pay (e.g. salaries, materials, equipment, rent, electricity, gas, heating, etc.)
– Annual surplus ( Jahresüberschuss): What the doctor ends up with as pure income “for taxation”. This is the most important value 🥳.
The list of specialties is sorted by income.
Earning the most (=annual surplus):
Radiologists (311 thousand) > Nuclear medicine (288.2 thousand) > Cardiology (270 thousand) > Pneumology (223 thousand)> List goes on…
Earn the least:
Psychotherapy (65 thousand)<Psychosomatic Medicine & Psychotherapy (70 thousand) <Physical & Rehabilitative Medicine (109 thousand) <Psychiatry (112 thousand) <GPs (146 thousand)
The tables are at the end of this article.
What do you think? Did you choose the right specialty? 🙃 Or does income not matter much to you? Feel free to write your opinion as a comment.
